System Shock – and SHODAN – is back!

Having first released to the world back in the mid-1990s, System Shock returns to Xbox and PlayStation – and it does so with a faithful recreation of the classic whilst adding new features, a new ending and 4K 60FPS visuals.

Available today as the latest remake from Nightdive Studios is System Shock. Playable on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5, it follows a critically acclaimed release on PC back in 2023. It comes to consoles with new features, with the most interesting being that of an expanded ending, a new female hacker protagonist and 4K 60FPS visuals on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5.

System Shock returns

Wherever you play, System Shock is a shooter/immersive sim that has players going up against a rogue AI, SHODAN. And as you may expect to hear, SHODAN has nothing but the most evil of intentions to mind. Battling through the depths of the Citadel Station will be the only way you can take down that evil and save the Earth from utter destruction.

There’s more with this remake though. It obviously mixes the gameplay found in the original game from 1994, but then chucks in all-new HD visuals, updated controls, an overhauled interface and all-new sounds and music. The console release features numerous improvements and the addition of a revised ending and optional female hacker protagonist.

And it plays really well too. We’ve been hands-on with System Shock on Xbox Series X|S for a little while already, delivering a review for your reading pleasure.

System Shock Key Features

  • Unravel the chilling story of SHODAN’s rise and explore the mysteries of Citadel Station, piecing together the truth in this atmospheric sci-fi world
  • Face perilous traps, puzzles, and a legion of hostile and mutated creatures — created and controlled by the delightfully villainous SHODAN herself
  • Up to 4K 60FPS visuals on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X
  • The console release features a newly reworked ending that upgrades the final confrontation with SHODAN!
  • Choose between a male or female-presenting Hacker protagonist
  • Redesigned controls to support PlayStation and Xbox gamepads

“For the first time ever, the incredible world of System Shock is available to console gamers,” said Stephen Kick, CEO of Nightdive Studios. “We’re so excited to introduce our take on this pioneering piece of gaming history to a whole new audience.”
