Everything announced at the Dead By Daylight 8th Anniversary Celebration

Just like many of the major horror films that have joined it, Dead by Daylight has a cult following of players. And, if the recent 8th Anniversary announcements were anything to go by, the cult of Dead by Daylight is in for a real treat.

But if you missed out on any of the announcements, don’t worry, we got you. Here is everything that was announced during the recent Dead by Daylight 8th Anniversary broadcast.

Gather your d20s for the next chapter

Dead by Daylight Dungeons & Dragons

The headline announcement was that the next major chapter for Dead by Daylight would be Dungeons & Dragons. Not necessarily known for its horror, but lore enthusiasts will tell you it’s definitely there.

Challenge: See how many times you can say DbD D&D before tripping over your tongue.

Arguably, D&D is as popular it has ever been, with every group of friends doing podcasts of their playthroughs, and everything from a recent feature film in the form of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Stranger Things cashing in on it. And of course, let’s not forget Baldur’s Gate 3, so it makes perfect sense for Dead by Daylight to join in the fun.

And join in they do, introducing iconic villain Vecna as the new Killer and a new Survivor in the form of the Bard, Aestri Yazar. The mayhem will unfold on a new map too, the Forgotten Ruins. And yes, it will feature extensive dungeoneering as the name suggests.

But this new Chapter also promises a lot more than just that. Vecna has access to four spells from his Book of Vile Darkness that will appease long-time D&D fans. But this new Chapter doesn’t neglect the core element of playing D&D either, introducing dice rolls when trying to open one of the seven chests found within the map itself.

Using a d20, players can roll and hope for some good loot within. A two or a three will grant a regular Dead by Daylight item, or a four to 19 grants a magical item that can counter the spells of Vecna. Rolling a 20 AKA a critical success grants a special item that essentially grants a completely new perk to the Survivor. However, rolling a one, or a critical fail, will result in an as yet unknown nasty surprise. Mimics, anyone?

But perhaps the best news is that the release of this new chapter is just around the corner. That being the 3rd June to be more precise. But, if you are in the PTB on Steam, you have access immediately!

A new game mode is coming

If the standard mayhem and hijinks in a traditional game of Dead by Daylight wasn’t enough for you, then this new game mode will surely scratch your itch: Coming at some point is a new 2V8 Game Mode!

With more details due in July, we don’t know too much about this just yet. But with double the Killers and double the Survivors, that basic maths means double the fun, right?

2V8 changes things slightly by replacing Hooks with Cages as well as getting rid of Perks, in an attempt to keep things at an even pace. Obviously, this new mode will not work on all maps, so it will be limited to the larger maps only for this mode. Likewise too, only certain Killers will work in this more, but stay tuned for more information on this exciting new mode in July.

The next Chapter can’t wait to take a bite

Before we get onto the wider Dead by Daylight universe with the tie-in games popping up all over the place, another new Chapter was teased. At the end of the presentation, a short teaser showed us that Castlevania will be making its debut in Dead by Daylight at some point. Even less is known about this new Chapter, only that it is coming later this year. I think we can also expect a new gothic-themed map and some vampiric new additions. Not really going out on a limb with those assumptions am I?

A shadow drop parts the Fog

Another surprise that came completely out of the blue was a brand-new game from the world of Dead by Daylight. This one came with the added bonus that it is available right now on Steam.

What the Fog is a new two-player roguelite cooperative adventure featuring Dwight, Claudette and Feng Min as playable characters who have been sucked into a boardgame. Don’t let the cute, cartoony graphics lead you astray though, everything you see is still out to kill you.

What the Fog combines the roguelite tropes such as procedural generation and increasing difficulty with the Dead by Daylight gameplay. And, if you are one of the first 2000000 people to access it through their Behaviour Account, then What the Fog can be yours for free! But fear not if you miss out, as it is still available for purchase on Steam for $4.99. Fingers crossed it will be coming to consoles too at some point.

Updates to other tie-in games

We were also given glimpses of a couple of other games that branch into the wider Dead by Daylight narrative. A creepy new trailer for The Casting of Frank Stone was shown, which looks to continue Supermassive Games’ knack of creating the best narrative horror games in the business. Unfortunately, there was no release date for this, but they may have a busy second half of the year with this and the upcoming next chapter in The Dark Pictures Anthology if rumours are anything to go by.

Another update was given to the unnamed co-op shooter currently in development at Midwinter Games. Now known as “Project T”, it feels like this is some way off still. We do know that players will venture to an unexplored region of The Entity’s Realm known as the Backwater in this PvE shooter.

Project T is also launching an Insider Program for players to give first-hand feedback to the developers. For more information, head to insiderprogram.bhvr.com and sign-up.

And that’s everything, but I think you’ve been utterly spoiled with those announcements already. As someone who has played a handful of Dead by Daylight games, even I am excited for what is next for the game. But how does a more regular player feel about all the upcoming stuff? Let us know in the comments below.
